Beware of Deficit Mindsets that can Lower the Rigor of Bilingual/ESL Education

How are we ensuring equity of access to rigorous standards-based curriculum in our second language classrooms? Administrators must lead for equity and actively work to replace deficit mindsets that permeate our classrooms often disguised as well meaning "scaffolds" or "interventions".  Our second language students must have equal access to the grade level content, including language arts and reading, in order to close would be learning gaps. Lead for equity by implementing a standards based lesson cycle, including on-level tasks to demonstrate mastery of the learning objectives.

Benefits of Bilingual Education in the Early Years


Bilingual Education is for all students. Studies show bilingual education in the early years actually engages different areas of the brain that when we introduce a second language to an older student. Teaching core subjects in two languages increases rigor and critical thinking.
